Box Office Breakdown - Green Hornet on top

The Green Hornet, which you can see the review of below had a pretty good weekend, setting the highest opening weekend for a Seth Rogen live-action movie. The film had a budget of $125 million, so, I don't see the film having an issue reaching that at some point. The Dilemma came in second with $17 million, on a budget of $70 million showing that Vince Vaughn needs to step up his game, while True Grit continues to do extremely well with a budget of only $38 million, pulling in $15 million, putting it second all time for westerns.

So, not a bad weekend for movies this weekend. What did you see? Anything you would or wouldn't recommend?

Box Office Report - Tron: Legacy strikes gold

It's no surprise Tron: Legacy took the top spot. The Disney sequel had high expectations, and with less than stellar reviews, it could be tough to recoup the $170 million budget. The big surprise comes for the number 2 spot; Yogi Bear. While family movies always do well, this just had "crap" written all over it, and even though executives were hoping for better, in an attempt to make back the $80 million budget, I'm just surprised it did that much.

Box Office Report - Harry Potter beats Tangled

It's the weekend of the family movies, or, rather, Harry Potter and the family movies. The seventh Potter movie dropped an average 60% to rake in $50.4 million, beating out the Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore voiced animated film Tangled, which did a respectable $49.1 million. Megamind is still doing strong in third place. Faster premiered in seventh, with a dismal $8.7 million.

Box Office Breakdown - Megamind dominates

It was a busy weekend with Megamind coming in first place and Due Date coming in second place. Both of which I reviewed this week, and both of which were no surprise. I was kinda surprised with For Colored Girls coming in third place, and I think everyone is surprised with how good Red is doing.

Box Office Report - Paranormal Activity 2 dominates

Paranormal Activity 2 blew away expectations to land in first place with $41.5 million, setting a record for horror movie premieres. The original blew away all expectations, but steadily grew in money week after week. While the second has a very promising start, I don't know if it will be able to maintain the huge box office dollars, despite great reviews (including one from yours truly).

Jackass 3D dropped an expected 60% to come in second, with Red coming in third. Not a bad box office weekend for films.

Jackass is king in the box office

Action comedy Red had a good showing with $22.5 million, but it was Jackass that dominated the box office with an impressive $50 million weekend. It's nearly double that of Jackass 2, and quite an impressive start for a movie with a budget of $20 million. Also, the Social Network continues strong in third, showing a mere 29% drop in numbers, which is way below average for a films third week.

Overall, it looks like there were quite a few people in the theaters over the weekend. So, what did you see?

Year One bombs, The Proposel Wins!

Happy Monday, movie geeks!
To start things off this week, we're going to look at how last week went for some new movies and some old ones.

The Proposal got first place with a decent $34.1 million, which isn't too shabby, considering the film only had a budget of $40 million. Once again, both Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds show they can bring in the crowd.
The Hangover, one of the funniest movies of the year took second place on its third week with an impressive $26.8 million, which is amazing considering the total is over $150 million for a movie with a $35 million budget. Clearly there will be atleast 10 more of these made in the coming years.
Disney/Pixar's Up got a handsome third place, showing the movie has some real staying power with a total of $21.3 million.
Year One comes in a dismal fourth place with $20.2 million, which could struggle to get its $60 million budget back.

Star Trek is still in the seventh spot, refusing to drop out of the top 10 with a $4.7 million dollar showing. Clearly the new trekkies are just as passionate as the old ones.

So, now, that we know how last week did, its time to put on the Great Kevini hat of predicting stuff. (I'm still working on the name) Transfomers 2 is set to be released on Friday, which will pretty much desimate the movies I listed above, but how high will it go? The first movie got a $70 million opening weekend, and considering sequels generally do better, I'm going with a $86 million opening weekend.

So, given all the hype, are you going to brave the predicted crowds, or are you waiting?
I don't know if I can wait, but if the crowds are bad, I may have to pull a week-day viewing next week.

Will Terminator Salvation live up to its name?

The fourth film in the Terminator series is out as of today, but will the McG directed movie truly be the salvation for the series everyone is hoping for, or will it be a big, machine driven flop?
The studios are predicting a luke warm first week at around $50 million. The movie, which has received less than stellar reviews, in my expert opinion will rake in a $52 million dollar weekend, given Night at the Museum 2: Secret of the Ooze is also coming out.

I also think Star Trek will take the third spot this week, to Terminator and Night at the Museum, respectively, leaving Angels and Demons to drop to a depressing fourth place, with Wolverine rounding out the top 5.
